In order to sync data with the PC, your data collector needs a software to bridge between its Windows Mobile operating system and the operating system of your computer. For Windows XP and older, that software is Activesync. For Windows Vista and newer, it is called Windows Mobile Device Center, abbreviated WMDC. The first step in troubleshooting is to make sure you have the software installed and updated. You can download the softwares here:
ActiveSync v. 4.50
Windows Mobile Device Center v. 6.10
If you are having trouble connecting, try the following steps:
1. Do the contacts look clean and undamaged? Clean contacts with Windex or All Purpose cleaner, ensuring that the power is off. Make sure they are dry before starting unit.
2. Have you tried a different USB cable and port? Sometimes ports and cables can be damaged.
3. Are you running the latest software updates? If not, visit the links above and download the updates. Restart the PC and plug the unit back in.
4. Is the "Advanced Network Functionality" box checked? You can find it on the mobile device at Start > Settings > Connections > USB to PC. If it is checked, try unchecking the box. Sometimes the network functionality conflicts with the Activesync or WMDC connection.
5. Is Activesync on the device set to accept USB connections? You can find out on the mobile device at Start > Programs > Activesync > Menu > Connections > Synchronize All PCs with this connection: 'USB
6. Is the device driver properly installed on the PC? You will need administrative rights for this solution. Hover your mouse over My Computer and Right click > Manage > Device Manager > Look for the device in the list. You will likely need to go through each device type. Look for a device with either a question mark (?), exclamation point (!) or red X (X). This shows that the device is not installed properly. Double click on the device and select 'Update Driver'. The PC will ping the internet to find a new driver and the device should connect.
